On our way across the flat windy
state of South Dakota from Sioux City to Rapid City we stopped at two very,
um, interesting spots. Mitchell's Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD and
Wall Drug in Wall, SD were both worth the stop, if for no other reason
than to be able to say you've seen them. The Corn Palace is, as the
name implies, made of corn and Wall Drug is, as its name implies, is drug
store (with a few differences).
As we found out just the facade of the building is made
out of corn. I guess that otherwise it wouldn't be "up to code".
The designs change yearly. Inside there is a civic center and in
the lobby a history of the Corn Palace.
The sign for Wall Drug. Established in the 1930s the drug store has always been a welcomed oasis for the rough and tumble
traveler. Over the years it has become a destination rather than just a
stop over.
Me, meeting the ladies. I don't think she was interested
though.
